Heart of Membership
Hunger & Thirst/Mercy

As we grow in discipleship, God implants in our hearts a deep, intense longing for everything good. Opportunities to do that good become irresistible. Compelled by God, we must do our part.

Daily Prayer: Lord, give me a deep longing for your perfect creation and a willingness to work for the good of others.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”- Mat. 5:6

Monday, September 29
Read Matthew 6:19-34. What things in your life do you have a deep “hunger and thirst” for? Are all of those things “righteous?” What does Jesus say we are to “seek first?” How do we know when we’ve found it?

Tuesday, September 30
Read 2 Corinthians 5. Paul begins this chapter with a deep longing. What is he longing for? What does he do about his longing? How would you describe your longing? What are you doing about it?

Wednesday, October 1
Read Revelation 7:9-17. We will not “hunger and thirst for righteousness” forever. When will we be satisfied? Envision what it will be like to live in a world with no sin. Compare that world to the one we live in now. Hungry?

“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.” – Mat. 5:7

Thursday, October 2
Read 1 John 3:16-24. What does John have to say about those who have the means to help those in need but ignore them? What is the link between belief in Jesus and loving one another?   Why are we to be merciful to others?

Friday, October 3
Read Matthew 9. Was Jesus’ mercy limited to people’s physical needs? How can we also be merciful with forgiveness? Why do we find it easier to be merciful with people’s physical needs than their spiritual needs?

Saturday, October 4
Read Jude. Jude connects mercy with “saving others by snatching them out of the fire.” Is it merciful to call people to repentance? If so, is it unmerciful when we ignore people’s sin? How can we tactfully and lovingly call people to repentance without seeming judgmental?
